When did it become normal to dance pressing up against a woman's backside?

I was in a college bar last night and I noticed practically every woman was dancing with her backside pressed against her man's crotch. When did this become the acceptable way of dancing? Is there a name for this kind of dancing? Is this symbolic of how alienated we have become that we can't even face who we are dancing with?
