Dummy/pacifier and 5months old..?

hi, I would like to wean my baby off his dummy/pacifier for various reasons (never really wanted him to have one in the 1st place but he was colicky and it is supposed to be good to avoid cot death syndrom). Any idea on how to do that? He doesn't have it during the day anymore apart from nap time but he's screaming his head off at the moment in his bed...help!!!
